Navicular Disease

چکیده

Despite thousands, or perhaps millions, of words, navicular disease remains a subject of confusion and error. I have written as clearly as I can on the subject, defining what the condition actually is and how it may develop. My opinions are based on years of observation, primarily in the postmortem room, together with some in vitro studies. [1,2] While it might be convenient to have all that repeated here, I can only hope that you will check the references which are readily available . Here I want to add information from a more recent in vitro study, make some additional observations, and try to clarify some points.

The force and contact stress on the navicular bone during trot locomotion in sound horses and horses with navicular disease.

Mechanical overload due to poor conformation or shoeing has been suggested to contribute to the development of navicular disease. While studies have determined the compressive force exerted on the navicular bone in normal horses, this has not been reported for horses with navicular disease. Also, the force has not been converted to stress by correction for contact area. In this study we develop...

An unusual cause of medial foot pain: The cornuate navicular.

The accessory navicular bone (ANB) is a secondary ossification center of the navicular bone and is rarely observed. Three distinct types of accessory navicular bones have been described. The type III, known as the cornuate navicular, is a rare morphological entity of the accessory navicular bone. We report the case of a patient, 48 years old, who presented with chronic swelling and pain in her ...

Navicular disease...remembrance of things past

Over the past few decades, the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of equine lameness has revolutionized our understanding of what used to be termed ‘navicular disease’. Prior to MRI, navicular disease was diagnosed primarily by a positive response to palmar digital nerve blocks (PDNB) and identification of characteristic radiological findings; particularly changes...

Navicular syndrome in equine patients anatomy, causes, and diagnosis.

Navicular syndrome is a chronic and often progressive disease affecting the navicular bone and bursa, deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), and associated soft tissue structures composing the navicular apparatus. This syndrome has long been considered one of the most common causes of forelimb lameness in horses. Diagnosis of navicular syndrome is based on history, physical examination, lameness ex...

Are distal border fragments of the navicular bone of clinical significance?

Fragments of the distal border of the navicular bone are identified radiologically with low frequency in horses free from lameness. There is higher frequency of occurrence in horses with foot pain, especially navicular disease. The clinical significance of a fragment per se is controversial. There is limited knowledge about the progression of the lesion and/or lameness. The pathogenesis of frag...
